The Process

8 Simple Steps to Monster Drum Tracks For You

Here is a basic overview about how we generally proceed with every project:

1. Introduction: You start off with a quick call or e-mail exchange with Martin about your project. Tell us about your music, how many tracks you would like to do, what you're looking for, what format you need the tracks in, etc.

2. MP3s: Next, e-mail Martin the track or tracks in Mp3 (or similar) form. It doesn't matter what quality level it is, if it's a super rough demo, a scratch guitar track with click, or whatever. Just send it so Martin can get a general sense of song length and intricacy and an overall feel for what would be involved with your project.

3. Quote: Martin will then quote you a rate for the project. (At this point, we're usually less than 24 hours into the whole process.)

4. Deposit: If it's a go, then we'll send you a written quote, hit your credit card for half the amount of the session as a deposit, and get the Mp3s to Bobby ASAP.

5. Conference Call: Martin and Bobby will then conference with you and discuss a number of ideas for your project, including drum sounds, part ideas, and what your overall vision for the tracks might be. Once you're all on the same page, a session time is arranged where you will have access to a phone and the Net (so the guys can send you the tracks for your approval and get live feedback from you).

6. Session: Bobby and Martin go into the studio and cut the track. Once they're feeling good about it, Martin will e-mail you an MP3 of it for your feedback.

7. Revisions?: If you're thrilled with the track, great! The guys will keep going (if there is more than one tune to do). But, if you would like to hear a few adjustments, no problem. You can talk to both Martin and Bobby via speakerphone, live from the studio, and discuss changes. The guys will then drop another track for you and e-mail the revised version.

Note: We are happy to do two or three revisions for you if need be, at no additional expense, based on sounds (like a different snare, for example) or different part ideas. However, if it starts getting crazy ("Now on this fifth revision, try that piccolo snare again but go back to the original bass drum part for the bridge..."), then Martin will politely let you know when you have to "reel it in" to avoid any overages. So far, though, we've never had any issues with this.

8. Finals: Once you're happy and the work is done, we'll hit your card for the balance and upload all of the Pro Tools* sessions to a private server, where you can download them. And yes, this can include multiple versions of some songs, if necessary, so you can edit the tracks together as you wish.

Tools of the Trade

As for gear - yes - we are decked out with all the latest and the greatest. Martin has the cutting edge Pro Tools rig and all related goodies, plus a bunch of cool mics. Pro Tools sessions are obviously the easiest to work with, but we can often accommodate other formats.

Bobby has a unique assortment of drums, featuring a handful of customized, time-tested snares and three different bass drum sizes (ranging from a vintage 22" Gretsch to a custom made, "Bonham-esque" 26" radial bridge kick drum). His cymbal collection is extensive, as well.

But honestly, with all of the combined studio experience that Martin and Bobby have, one thing remains true: this isn't rocket science. You hear a track, select a set-up that will complement the sonics and feel of the tune, put some mics up there and hit the record button. The magic is in the Monster!
